Silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue but require a slightly larger incision. Saline implants can be inserted empty and filled, allowing for smaller incisions, but can feel firmer.
Submuscular (under the chest muscle) placement is most common because it provides a more natural look, lowers the risk of capsular contracture, and makes mammograms easier. Over-the-muscle is used for patients with good existing tissue.
Breast implants do not have a lifetime guarantee, but they do not need to be replaced on a schedule. You only need to replace them if you experience a rupture, contracture, or cosmetic changes.
Temporary numbness or hypersensitivity in the nipples is common for the first few weeks due to tissue stretching. Permanent loss of sensation occurs in less than 2% of patients.
You must sleep exclusively on your back for the first 4 weeks. After that, you can transition to your side, but you should avoid sleeping directly on your stomach for 8 to 10 weeks.
